On Easter 2010 my 9 year old lab was playing tug-tug. I noticed a bit of blood and brought her in for a closer look. It seemed she had pulled a bottom tooth loose and injured her gum. I took her to the vet(not my ususal) the next day for antibiotics. The C word was mentioned and they wanted her in for surgery to have the area removed that week. No way! This vet is totally off base. By Wednesday the "injury" was now a mass the size of my index finger tip. Took her to the regular vet and realized this was more than just tough playtime. X-rays, blood work, biopsy of the mass and wait for the results. As of Sunday (one week later) the mass had increased by 100% it now resembled a wad of bubble gum 2" in mass. Biopsy results came in on Monday as osteosarcoma. Surgery for a partial mandibularectomy was scheduled fro Friday. I had the option of going to the specialist for this surgery but had faith my vet would give the best in care for my Dallas. I am now 2 days post surgery and looking at different chemotherapy and feeding options. I know from my girls continued strength and positive energy I made the right choice having the surgery. She still is not real happy with the soft food diet but seems to be tolerating my attempts to feed her all her favorites.
In terms of happiness during your life the cost is really insignificant.
