Dallas's story

On Easter 2010 my 9 year old lab was playing tug-tug. I noticed a bit of blood and brought her in for a closer look. It seemed she had pulled a bottom tooth loose and injured her gum. I took her to the vet(not my ususal) the next day for antibiotics. The C word was mentioned and they wanted her in for surgery to have the area removed that week. No way! This vet is totally off base. By Wednesday the "injury" was now a mass the size of my index finger tip. Took her to the regular vet and realized this was more than just tough playtime. X-rays, blood work, biopsy of the mass and wait for the results. As of Sunday (one week later) the mass had increased by 100% it now resembled a wad of bubble gum 2" in mass. Biopsy results came in on Monday as osteosarcoma. Surgery for a partial mandibularectomy was scheduled fro Friday. I had the option of going to the specialist for this surgery but had faith my vet would give the best in care for my Dallas. I am now 2 days post surgery and looking at different chemotherapy and feeding options. I know from my girls continued strength and positive energy I made the right choice having the surgery. She still is not real happy with the soft food diet but seems to be tolerating my attempts to feed her all her favorites.

Cancer fighting tip from Dallas's owner Danika S.

In terms of happiness during your life the cost is really insignificant.

Dallas's owner 2nd round went by again with no problems. I am sa thankful she is not having any side effects. She played all weekend and even went for a little swim.

Dallas's owner She is really doing well. We have both had a busy 4 day weekend and I think may both be showing our age a bit. She is adapting so quickly to all the things she always did. I actually came around the corner and she was playing tug of war again. My first thought was panic she would get hurt. Then I realized she was having fun and that is precisley why i had have gone through all this to fight off the cancer.

Dallas's owner The weather here in Alaska has been absolutley gorgeous this last week. After the long winter the sunshine and long days was so needed. Dallas and I have been doing long walks in the woods and park everyday after work. So good to see her run and be a dog again. That tongue of hers though seems to get drug through everything. Now her bandanas aren't just for fashion, they come in very handy to wipe away dirt and slobber.

Dallas's owner Today Dallas has her 2nd round of chemo. She was so lucky the first time with none of the side effects I was expecting. A little tired, a little less hungry and her CBC count came in a little low but no nauseau, no vomiting etc... I don't know why but it seems so hard for me to have her go through these treatments all the same. Maybe it is the slap in the face that we are really dealing with cancer here. Or maybe it is just my own guilt over dragging her through more and more with the vet.

Grady's owner Don't know if it was just a coincidence, but I just found out that Grady's white blood cells doubled since the last round of chemo-the only thing that changed is the rosemary water...it is making me a believer :)!

Dallas's owner Last weekend Dallas finally went to her toy basket and started to play again. I am not sure which of us was more happy. She was so pleased with herself carrying around her squeeky toy. She is adjusting and amazes me each and everyday. She made it through her first doxy-chemo treatment with none of the problems I expected. She sleeps in a little later and takes a few more naps but she really is rebounding a lot quicker than I ever hoped she would.

Dallas's owner Dallas is 3 days post surgery and doing amazing. I really should not be surprised at her resiliance and pride. I swear i have never had to actually "train" this dog to do a thing. She has always just known what I was asking of her and done it. I have never had a pet so eager to please. She goes back to the vet today to have her fentanyl patch changed and some IV fluids. I am a bit concerned about her refusal to drink water just yet. My heart dog!

Cody's owner That is how my Cody was. Just knew what to do. Did you try giving her chicken broth? That used to work with Cody and it got some nutrition in him as well.

Dallas's owner The chicken broth was how I go her to eat anything before surgery and then after I eased back on the soft food and added a bit of warm broth. After a few days she really seemed to want the kibble and not "soggy" food so now it is just the duck and sweet potato. She will eat just about anything I add that to.

Grady's owner My sis is really into chinese medicine....she told me that rosemary water is really good for white blood cells-which is just what our baby's need with chemo. Grady loves it-drinks it up like it is a special treat! I don't know if it works-but I know it doesn't hurt....if you are on fb, let me know and I can send you some recipes if you are interested.
