Sugar's story

Sugar was taken to the E-vet on 2/16/2009, she had eaten her food as well as possibly eating Brembo's food (my english bulldog)...So I brought her into the vet to have her stomach pumped, fearing that the over eating would cause the 'bloat' (went thru it with Brembo) They did some xrays and confirmed that she had eaten almost 3 times what she was given (she had eaten both Brembo's and Lily's food). The vet pointed to the xray and said ' she has clearly over eaten..but this over here is a mass on her spleen'...and so it began...she stayed over night at the e-vet and I went and picked her up and brought her to her own vet, where they confirmed the mass and told me that at her age and with the mass being on her spleen that it was most likely HSA and that they could remove it along with the spleen and that might prolong her life 30-60-days...so she under went surgery that day along with mulitiple blood transfusions, the vet had removed a grapefruit sized tumor and sent it to be biopsied. A few days later the results came back...she was positive for HSA.....My world stopped. For the next week all I did was cry, visit her at the vet and search the internet for a 'cure'. A week later she came home and I immediatly changed her dog food and started chemo along with homeopathic remedies... so to make a long story short..its a year later and she is doing well..she had xrays taken on the anniversary of her diagnosis and her heart looks good.. and no blatant signs of matastsis! Over the last year I have come to terms with the fact that HSA will someday take her life, but I am also confident that this cancer although it may not be 'curable' it is definately treatable!
She is the strongest willed dog I have ever met, and is no stranger to surgeries when i adopted her she was in bad shape..she had a vaginal prolapse along with severe internal damage that led to a nephrectomy and her eye had to be removed...
As i sit here typing thru the tears, she is laying next to me snoring loudly and kicking me to give her more room.

The first day I 'googled' Hemangiosarcoma I read someones blog and they said that ' HSA seems to go after the dog that is closest to you'. I adopted her in Nov of 2001 (I had just turned 19 and moved out on my own) and since then she has been the 1 thing that has been a constant in my life. She has been there for all the major mile stones that I have had so far: moving from NJ to NC on my own, getting married, buying a house and thru all of my husbands military deployments. I am in a way thankful for her cancer, strange as it may sound, I no longer take her for granted. She is my best friend and I love her with all my heart.
