Bailey was her normal self on March 1st, went for a long walk, running around the house, playing with toys, etc. By March 2, she was lethargic and refused to eat. I made an immediate appointment with my vet to have her checked within 2 hours. Bailey had Copper Storage Disorder (very rare in labs) and her last check-up showed elevated liver enzymes again. Thinking this was the cause of her problems I wanted to get her checked that day. Before her appointment we let her outside to chase a squirrel, looked out 5 seconds later and found her lying in a heap in a snowbank. We rushed her to the vet as she was going into shock, then raced her to Cornell Animal Hospital. Her heart stopped on the table but they revived her, and 2 days later found a tumor in her heart. The doctors assumed hemangiosarcoma, although they could not get close to the tumor to get a biopsy for fear of her bleeding to death. She ultimately had a pericardiectomy and we brought her home the following week to live out the rest of her life. She did not receive chemo due to her liver disease, but she did receive holistic treatments and accupuncture and did well for 3 weeks. She had a mini-bleed on the Tuesday before she died and recovered enough to enjoy a sunny, mild day on Thursday. By Friday she was struggling to breathe and becoming increasingly lethargic. After 48 hours of struggle, she passed away in my arms at 2:40 pm on a horrible Sunday afternoon.
Enjoy every minute of every day with them and let them know how much you love them. If you are happy, they are happy!
