Bleu's story

Bleu is a 12 yr old Blue Tick Coonhound. He belonged to my parents who in 1998 died of Cancer, yes, both of them. At the time Bleu was 8 months old, and I adopted him. He is a wonderful dog, who has more personality then most of the people I meet. He loves to swim, play ball, and go for walks.

A few months ago Bleu started to urinate in the house, he has never done this before, especially right in front of us.

We took him to the vet's and since he did not show any other signs of a bladder infection, the Vet was thinking he may be suffering from Canine Cognitive Disorder, or senility in dogs.

We purchased a Male Dog diaper at a local pet store; however, the male type diapers kept falling off. We ordered an item from the internet called "Tinkle Trousers", and it is worn kind of like a harness and holds a human child's diaper. This item works great, and a short time later Bleu did use the Tinkle Trousers and much to our surprise we found Blood had settled in the diaper, which in any other situation we would not have seen. We have Tinkle Trousers to thank!

We took Bleu back to the Vet's and it was suggested or believed that he may have Bladder Stones, and it was arranged to have an Ultra-Sound. On January 19th 2010, it was found during the Ultra Sound that Bleu had a mass (Tumor) in his Bladder, and was diagnosed with Transitional Cell Carcinoma. The good news if there could be any, was the tumor was not blocking any of the tubes in or out of the bladder and was positioned on the back wall.

Just when we thought the nightmare couldn't get any worse, it appears that the cancer has spread to his Iliac lymph nodes.

On Wednesday the 27th Bleu started Chemotherapy "Mitoxantrone" along with Deramaxx (NSAID).
We also started with K9 Immunity and Transfer Factor as an immune supplement.

Cody's owner You might want to contact Rosie's owner as she is using Palladia. Healing thoughts to you and Bleu. http://www.fightdogcancer.com/dogs/9-rosie-labrador-retriever-Mast%20Cell

Bleu's owner Bleu went for his Ultrasound this past Friday to see if the Chemo (two doses) was doing it's job. It appeared that the tumor in his bladder, and the iliac lymph nodes are unchanged, so that is a good thing. The bad news is that it is now present in his prostate. The oncology vet is going to try a new drug, palladia. His appetite comes and goes, but I'm sure the new drug is upsetting his stomach and digestive track. We'll keep you posted. If anyone has used palladia, or knows anything about it, please post and let me know. Thanks!

Bleu's owner Bleu went for his second Chemo treatment on the 17th, and so far so good. He is still very active and shows no negative side effects. Also, good news, over the last week or so, the spotty blood that was seen in his diaper has been nonexistent. :)

Bleu's owner Feb 6th. Bleu loves the snow, and we got over a foot of it today. We went running and playing in the snow. You would never know he was sick. Aside from spotty blood in his urine and diaper, he looks and acts fine.

Bleu's owner Bleu went back to the Vet's on the 3rd of February for blood work (CBC). It did show a slight decline in his white cell count, but not enough to worry about, or for him to be put on antibiotics. He is still very playful, and full of energy.
