Rena's story

Rena collapsed, had an emergency splenectomy. Her diagnosis of HSA with mets to her liver devastated me. They gave her 1-3 month window with chemo, and 1 month +/- without, we decided to give her chemo to extend her life a bit. Meanwhile, I tried complementary treatments to enhance her immune system, and manage/lessen her symptoms. I immediately changed her diet, added herbs, supplements, quit all other nonessential treatments (such as heartworm preventatives). During the entire time, we never missed our walk. It was somewhat effective, she had some symptoms which we headed off with accupuncture and iscador, but she had eventual tumor growth. My criteria was to do whatever it takes as long as she had good quality of life, and for me that meant good days, with normal activity, exercise, good appetite with no pain or disability. And for 4 months she did until she collapsed of a major bleed late one night, and again twice more the next morning. She was bleeding internally and very weak. We set her free that day. Hemangiosarcoma is disgusting. I miss her!

Cancer fighting tip from Rena's owner Laura L.

For others diagnosed with HSA, get a good supply of yunnan baiyao. Don't be afraid of chinese herbs or others for that matter. Just go slowly so that if there is a reaction you will know what to stop. Chemo is useful for this cancer, as it does slow the cancer somewhat. I found the oral cancer protocol using cytoxan/doxycycline generated less symptoms, was cheaper and you can do it at home, and for my dog that was good. She stressed in the car, at the vets, etc. BTW, Rescue Remedy flower essence is good for that..... Diet is important and keeping your dog eating is sometimes a challenge. I only had a problem with that on her last day and it was an omen.

Rena's owner I was looking on the internet for rescue dogs in my area and found an older yellow lab at a local shelter. I went in and he was adopted already! Lucky dog! As I was leaving, a woman came in with a young German Shepherd stray she and a neighbor had found. They advertised on Craigslist for two weeks and nobody contacted them, so they were turning him in. I said "That is exactly what I am looking for" to no one in particular. It was one of those moments when everyone in the room knew what to do. We turned around and walked together to the parking lot, loaded him into my car and wished eachother well. I drove off with a big grin on my face. Turns out, he's about 8 months old and spirited, but shadows me wherever I go. He looks like a shepherd but also might be part husky, I think. He's a great walking/running partner, is smart and has learned a lot in the few days he's been with us. I normally would have waited 3-6 months before thinking I was ready to get another dog, but this is good, and probably exactly what I needed.

Walter's owner I just read your post and I am so happy for you! I don't know that I will be able to get another dog right away either, but everything happens for a reason. You were meant to go to that shelter and find him. Yay!!!!

Walter's owner I am so sorry about the loss of your Rena. I am always drawn to the people with Shepherds, since that is what I have always had. My boy, Walter, is putting up a heck of a fight and I hope he continues to. I have many dogs in my life, but Walter is special to me because he was MY first dog. I got him when I moved out, and he has been by my side since then. I know I have to let him go eventually but I'm not ready to yet. I think I'll know when its time. I cry my eyes out every time I read other people's stories, but it is somewhat comforting to read about how others have made it through their grief.

Rena's owner I am going to look into this. How did they do it? I lost my Corgi in March and I'd like to talk to him, too. Rena got sick after he died, so I believe you are smart to try to help your current dogs. There is a homeopathic remedy for grief called Ignatia. I gave Rena some once I found out about it and I dosed us both the day she died. I believe it's helpful. I have about 20 dogs waiting for me at Rainbow Bridge already, so it'll be a party I would'nt want to miss!

Dana's owner I'm so sorry you lost Rena. How can we be prepared to lose our babies like that? It just isn't fair. I miss Dana so much. It's been over 7months since she left and I still cry every day. But I did get some peace from the animal communicator. I didn't get the communicator in until 6 months after she had gone to the Bridge, so you should be able to find someone who will connect with Rena for you, to let you know she is okay. I also had her 'talk' to my two current dogs to make sure that they are happy. I worry about them so much now. Rena sure is a beautiful girl, I'm sure she's made many new friends at the Rainbow Bridge.

Dana's owner Oh, sorry you lost your corgi too. I'm going to get some of that Ignatia, I need something like that somedays. the communicator came to my house and looked at photos of Dana and relayed 'images' she was getting from her. One of them was so spot on, a description of a secret place we used to go to that no one knew about, that's when I knew there really had been a conncetion. And she jsut got messages and images form my tow girls, Scully and Ivy, it was quite amazing really. I've got a few waiting at the Briddge too, look fwd to the day we all meet up again, what a big party that will be. Take Care.
