Enzo's story

Two weeks and 3 days ago, Enzo had a strange cough followed the next day by limping and then 2 days of not wanting to eat. This was an extremely strange sequence of behavior, particularly not wanting to eat. Enzo is always the first at the food bowl. We took him for an emergency appointment at the vet. My husband mentioned to our vet that Enzo's abdomen seemed heavy. We thought he would weigh about 10 more pounds than he did. The vet kept Enzo and did an abdominal ultrasound. 5 PM we received the devastating news that Enzo had a mass on his spleen which was generally a sign of Hemangiosarcoma. It was also bleeding. We were sad beyond belief. We opted to do a splenectomy to be performed 1st thing the next morning. Enzo came through the surgery with flying colors, even coming home the same day. I went out and bought a new video camera so that I could capture every moment possible, as I started reading about Hemangiosarcoma. Enzo's recovery from the surgery has been great. He bounced back like a puppy and it is great to be able to share these days with him as a happy happy dog. Completely 100% opposite from that day we left him at the vet for the ultrasound.
We did get the biopsy results from his spleen and a few nodules removed from his liver and it confirmed the diagnosis we had already suspected.
We opted to not do chemo as this type of cancer is so aggressive and we don't want Enzo not to be himself from possible side effects. He is taking Yunnan Paiyao and Meloxicam.
We downloaded 42 Rules to Fight Dog Cancer on our iPAD today and found this website.
We are interested in learning more about a new diet for Enzo and sharing stories with other people who are going through this traumatic experience. We can't imagine life without Enzo, and we have gone through some grief stages in the last 2 weeks, but now we are picking ourselves up and moving forward. I never expected to be sitting here researching canine cancer, but knowledge is power and we need comfort and support.

Cancer fighting tip from Enzo's owner Bonnie B.

Give your dog as much love as you possibly can.

Zoe b. I am so sorry to hear about your sad loss. I have a 8 year old spin and we are fighting lymphnoma at the moment. Not sure if cancer is something spins suffer with often but I know it breaks your heart. If your enzo was anything like mine I know you will have had 8 amazing years with him and lots of happy memories. My heart goes out to you and your family.x

Enzo's owner Hi Zoe, I am so sorry you also have a Spinone suffering from cancer. It seems that since I have shared my story, I am finding more and more people that have lost a Spinone to cancer. Enzo was only 7 years/7 months. For some reason this site is calculating his age wrong. I pray for you and your journey ahead.

Ginger's owner I'm so sorry to hear about Enzo... I just read his story and it is very familiar to me. Our Ginger also had her spleen removed at age 12 1/2. Ginger was also insulin dependent. We made changes to her diet, but mostly, we got after the cause of the problem and got to keep our Ginger. I'm happy to share what we did. She's a miracle, for sure. Her story is on my website. Let me know if you'd like to chat. Best of luck to you. He sure looks like a sweetheart. www.RosemarysSolutions.com ~Rosemary
