Maxwell's story

We found Maxwells tumor when we took him to the vet for problems with his anal glands. Our vet discovered a thumbnail sized lump in his left gland and his right was infected. He had an ultrasound done to see if there were any lumps elsewhere and they didn't find any. My vet does not do anal gland removal surgery herself but staffed Maxwells case with a surgeon and the surgery to remove both anal glands and the tumor was done 06/28/11. Got the results of the biopsy back 06/30/11. The tumor was malignant but the surgeon feels that the entire tumor was removed. Devastated by the news but also heartened that our vet is optimistic because we caught the cancer so early. Our vet is talking to an oncologist to see if Chemo is warranted. Will find out after the 4th of July holiday. I already feed my pets grain free kibble combined with home cooked meats and vegis. I Am exploring immune system supplements to go with the multi vitamins and cosequin that I already give My dogs.

Maxwell's owner Its been a while since I was on here but wanted to keep posting on Maxwells story for people who have dogs who have been diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma. Maxwell has done wonderful since he had the surgery in 06/11. No problems with incontinence or anything else. He went in for a check up in December and got a clean bill of health. On 01/30/12 I noticed he was not keeping himself clean so cleaned him up with baby wipes and felt a hard round lump. We took him to the vet on 02/01/12 and our vet found a lump the size of a tangerine. She took a sample and it is a malignant tumor. The aggressiveness of the tumor has us really worried. We are having bloodwork, chest xrays and an ultrasound done on Monday. Due to the size of the tumor and the need to excise at least 2 centimeters surgery may not be an option. For now we are just trying to determine if it has spread. No prognosis has been given to us yet. Will post again after the tests have been done.

BUDDY's owner Hi, i just read Maxwell's story and I wondered how he was doing? My dog Buddy had the same type of cancer but chemo was suggested and given to him. I also agree with Ginger's owner about the kibble. I did not give Buddy any dry food. He ate homemade food and Evanger's canned food. I think I included all of the foods and supplements in Buddy's story. Good luck to Maxwell.

Maxwell's owner We spoke to Maxwells vet and chemotherapy is not indicated for Maxwells type of cancer. I am thankful for that as even though we were told dogs do not have the same side effects as people i did not relish the idea of putting Maxwell thru that process. I am having a hard time finding good info on Maxweells type of cancer as far as treatments(western/eastern), prognosis etc. If anyone has some good resources(books, internet sites etc) on this type of cancer the info would be greatly appreciated.

Mauja's owner Sorry to hear about Maxwell. Same thing happened to us in March with our GSD, Mauja. She went in for her yearly routine check up and the vet tech discovered the lump while expressing her anal glands. Very thankful we discovered it so early.

Maxwell's owner Thanks for your thoughts. How is Mauja doing now? How often did your vet recommend Mauja come in for checkups?

Mauja's owner He recommended coming in every four months. Although I've been back a few times since then. After surgery, I noticed that Mauja, was posturing a lot, as if she had to poop, but she never really did. The vet thought maybe it was an infection or scar tissue. After some antibiotics, she seemed to get better, but unfortunately this week, she has been licking a lot back there. So...back to the vet tomorrow morning. How is Maxwell doing?

Ginger's owner So sorry to hear about Max. Thanks for sharing his story. He's so young! You're lucky to have caught it. I have a question about the grain free kibble you're giving... what's the percentage of protein and what kind of carbs are in it? You may want to reduce the carbs even more and go without the kibble. Immune support supplements are also great. I may be able to help with some ideas. Rosemary@RosemarysSolutions.com
