Summer is a very well cared for dog, as I am a vet tech. She had her spleen removed when she was 7yrs old. It was just a hematoma, probably from a hard knock from her crazy active lifestyle. September 2009 She had some benign growths removed from her liver.
Summer has always been an active dog. The July 4th weekend we spent at Santa Cruz. She loves the beach. eleven days later she collapsed at home with my husband while I was at work. He brought her right in. Keep in mind her abdomen had been inspected last September during a surgery and a recheck ultrasound in March. She had chest xrays in May. We knew right away with ultrasound (that July) she had an abdominal bleed. She spent the night at the E clinic and had surgery the next day. She had her kidney removed. It had hemangiosarcoma. I thought she would not get it because she didn't have a spleen, but that is not the case. HSA does not originate in the spleen. The cells that cause it originate in the bone marrow. So it just found her kidney instead.
We do a lot of chemo at our hospital, but just a month previously I had been to some lectures at UC Davis. I thought I would call them just to see if there was anything else I could do for my baby. They only talk to docs, so they took my contact info & called my doc right away. Turns out they do adriamycin every two weeks whereas most places do it every three. We have been following their protocol & it has been 3 months since Summer's surgery! She had METS in her chest at the start of chemo! I think my good care and her great spirit is keeping her going. We did chest rads last week. They still look good, but I think she is slowing down. She lost 3lbs & has been a little weak on her weekly swim in the pool at the physical therapist's.
It's a little tough. When she loses her appetite, she likes beef. Protein is not that great for her one kidney. Her kidney values started to creep up & I had to give her fluids under the skin at home to flush out her kidney. That has helped.
I am hoping she will make it to her 14th birthday next month.
She didn't make it to her birthday. As I thought, she became ill fairly quickly. Her chest was still clear, but there was a met found in her abdomen. It started to cause her heart to have arrhythmias & tachycardia. She started to have fainting spell (syncopy) and possibly seizures. We put her to rest at home the morning after she stopped eating. There is a big hole. She was the sunshine in our lives.
Keep your dog eating as well as possible. Anything is always better than nothing.
Tortellini is good for pills.
Keep their interest & activity level up as much as possible. Even in humans this is very important. Give them a reason to live and keep going. Summer has taught me that. She goes for walks every day and swims every week.
I agree with Estelle. Love em every minute.
