Summer's story

Summer is a very well cared for dog, as I am a vet tech. She had her spleen removed when she was 7yrs old. It was just a hematoma, probably from a hard knock from her crazy active lifestyle. September 2009 She had some benign growths removed from her liver.
Summer has always been an active dog. The July 4th weekend we spent at Santa Cruz. She loves the beach. eleven days later she collapsed at home with my husband while I was at work. He brought her right in. Keep in mind her abdomen had been inspected last September during a surgery and a recheck ultrasound in March. She had chest xrays in May. We knew right away with ultrasound (that July) she had an abdominal bleed. She spent the night at the E clinic and had surgery the next day. She had her kidney removed. It had hemangiosarcoma. I thought she would not get it because she didn't have a spleen, but that is not the case. HSA does not originate in the spleen. The cells that cause it originate in the bone marrow. So it just found her kidney instead.
We do a lot of chemo at our hospital, but just a month previously I had been to some lectures at UC Davis. I thought I would call them just to see if there was anything else I could do for my baby. They only talk to docs, so they took my contact info & called my doc right away. Turns out they do adriamycin every two weeks whereas most places do it every three. We have been following their protocol & it has been 3 months since Summer's surgery! She had METS in her chest at the start of chemo! I think my good care and her great spirit is keeping her going. We did chest rads last week. They still look good, but I think she is slowing down. She lost 3lbs & has been a little weak on her weekly swim in the pool at the physical therapist's.
It's a little tough. When she loses her appetite, she likes beef. Protein is not that great for her one kidney. Her kidney values started to creep up & I had to give her fluids under the skin at home to flush out her kidney. That has helped.
I am hoping she will make it to her 14th birthday next month.
She didn't make it to her birthday. As I thought, she became ill fairly quickly. Her chest was still clear, but there was a met found in her abdomen. It started to cause her heart to have arrhythmias & tachycardia. She started to have fainting spell (syncopy) and possibly seizures. We put her to rest at home the morning after she stopped eating. There is a big hole. She was the sunshine in our lives.

Cancer fighting tip from Summer's owner Marlene P.

Keep your dog eating as well as possible. Anything is always better than nothing.
Tortellini is good for pills.

Keep their interest & activity level up as much as possible. Even in humans this is very important. Give them a reason to live and keep going. Summer has taught me that. She goes for walks every day and swims every week.
I agree with Estelle. Love em every minute.

Rupert's owner There's another dog out there for you. There will be some lab who will have a totally different personality and unique quirks...and you'll compare the two, but you'll get used to the new friend and you'll know that the fit is right. I have a friend who was so used to her dog's intuition and intelligence. Now, she's got a young girl who, my friend thinks, is hearing commands in French or Portuguese or something, but she still loves this new friend and has learned to be patient and positive.

Summer's owner I fell in love with Summer's father (master hunter). When he was bred, I got a puppy. Her brother & nephew are field champs. Summer had a litter. I know her daughter grew up to be special like her too. I really want that line. I don't know whey they won't breed her nephew. It would bring joy to my heart.

Rupert's owner I saw that you have rescue dogs too. I found Rupert in PetFinders.com. I believe in responsible breeding, don't get me wrong, and labs are great dogs!

Summer's owner My dog before Summer was a small terrier mix from the pound. She lived 2 weeks shy of her 17th birthday. Funny no one makes it to the next birthday, Summer barely a month away from 14. My cat 2 months away from 18... My little dog had a splenectomy too. She probably had hemangiosarc too. She was just so old, though. I put her to sleep because she was so frail & had a corneal ulcer that wouldn't heal. Probably walked or fell into something. I got over my cat & little dog ok. They were SO old. I wasn't ready to let go of Summer & she was so full of life still. My heart aches for her.

Summer's owner Poor little girl. In those days, the pain meds were crap. I feel so bad how my little 16yr old must have felt after her surgery....

Rupert's owner I so sympathize with what you've been through. It's hard to try to explain because it's so unfair. And, on top of the reality of the disease, the randomness of it all, and the emotional roller coaster we as humans go through, we are left to speculate how our friends who can't verbalize it to us..are feeling.

Ginger's owner Congratulations on Summer's success so far. I didn't know that HSA originates in bone marrow. Interesting. I see that Summer is getting good support with nutrients/ supplements. All the best to you. Be open to natural healing to support Summer on all levels.
