Bailey's story

Bailey was diagnosed with OS on June 5, 2010, and had his left hind leg amputated to remove the tumor on June 10, 2010. We have followed surgery with carboplatin chemotherapy at Oregon State University (5 rounds), and now that we have completed this, looking into additional treatment, possibly with Adriamycin, and Metronomic Protocol. We are also interested in Artemisinin, and have complimented Bailey's conventional treatment with holistic based treatment as well. We do home cooking supplemented with a small amount (1/2 cup per meal) of Taste of the Wild dog food. His home cooked diet is a combo of wild salmon, boneless/skinless chicken breast, lean ground beef, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, green beans, and garlic. We add to this A LOT of vitamins and supplements including: Vit C, E, calcium with vit D, COq-10, fish oil, selenium, L-arganine, glutamine, turmeric/curcumin, broccoli seed extract, reishi, miatake, shitake, agaricus blazai, green tea extract, noni, and IP-6. We also add a blend of kelp powder, soy lecithin, spirulina, and ground flax powder. Whew! A lot, but I believe all of the supplements he is getting are beneficial in our battle.

Cancer fighting tip from Bailey's owner Stacy H.

Research, read, and research more. Understand the treatment options and be your dogs biggest advocate. Fight for as long and as hard as you can, and don't listen to time estimates.

Cabernet's owner The diet and supplements you provided Bailey are something we would like to try. Would it be possible to provide the dosing information and how the supplements were fed? Cabernet is 89 pounds.

Bailey's owner Hi there. I'm more than happy to provide information. I had started to index all of the info in an excel sheet for sharing with others, I'll find that and send it on to you - you can email me at shabr at hotmail dot com, and I'll shoot some information your way (if that works ok for you). How is Cabernet doing? How did the amp go and is recovery going ok? So many good thoughts to your sweet boy.

Cabernet's owner Thanks for the information. Our dog Cabernet is scheduled for amputation of his left hind leg tomorrow (5/6). He is 1 week shy of 7 years old. We are scared but Bailey's story provides us hope. Thank you. I will add Cabernet's story soon.

Bailey's owner I'm so sorry to hear about your RR's diagnosis. When Bailey was dx'd, I didn't find many (luckily!) RRs that had been diagnosed.. it seemed to be a relatively uncommon cancer for the breed. I'm sad to say that we lost Bailey to the cancer in Jan. It came back on very suddenly, and had spread to his spine. Over the course of a weekend, he stopped using his remaining back leg, and an MRI revealed a mass on his spine. We actually pursued spinal surgery, being told that they didn't believe that the mass was OS, and that they were optimistic they could remove it. That did not turn out to be the case. Losing him has been very hard, and we still think about Bailey every day. I often still question our decision to let him go at that time, and I'll probably always struggle with that. Up until that point, Bailey did amazingly as a tripod, and never let the Cancer dx affect his zest for life, or appetite! The surgeon performing the surgery really pushed for us to let him go, telling us he likely wasn't going to be able to remove the mass as he thought he would and that Bailey would likely not walk. In any case, I'm glad we made the decision to amp and treat the cancer aggressively. We wouldn't trade our 7 months post dx with Bailey for anything. The best lesson I can take and share from that is to be your dog's number one advocate, and try to not let emotion in the moment of things control your decisions. I wish I had had more clarity at many points during our journey. I'm glad to see on Cabernet's wall that it sounds like you've caught the OS very early, and hopefully with amp, you will achieve a long remission. He is a beautiful boy. I would recommend that you also join a yahoo group called bonecancerdogs. You'll be happy to hear there is a 4 year RR survivor on the list! There is a wealth of information in this group, and I learned a lot of valuable information on treatment, and in general it was amazing support. The link is: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/bonecancerdogs/ I hope the amp goes well. Please keep us updated. Just curious as you're in Cali, where did you get Cabernet from? A breeder in Ca? He looks a lot our boy. Best wishes to you and Cabernet for a long, long, remission. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask! I'm glad to pass along any of the knowledge that we gained over our journey. Sending Cabernet lots of good thoughts for a quick recovery from surgery.

Cabernet's owner I'm so sorry to hear about Bailey. Thank you for the link to the website. We have two ridgebacks from the same breeder in Southern California. Cabernet is the first ridgeback from her dogs that has ever had cancer. It makes us think that it is something we have done; however our other ridgeback, female (Kayla) is almost 8. I hope Cabernet will be with us for many more years. Thanks again and I'll be asking more questions next week as we modify his diet and add vitamins.

Cher's owner Hope all is going well with Bailey. It is fortunate the tumor was on a limb that could be amputated. My girl's tumor showed up on her ribs, and had already metastized to her lungs by the time she was diagnosed. Keep up the good work on all your healing approaches, and enjoy every day with your sweet boy!

Ginger's owner What a beautiful dog Bailey is! It's great to see you using so many natural supplements. Have you considered energy healing methods like acupuncture and Reiki? How about detox with zeolite. Let me know if I can help. I'll send good thoughts your way.

Bailey's owner Hi Rosemary, Thanks for the hello and suggestions. We have considered other things such as reiki, but I haven't read or heard much yet about zeolite. Interested after reading Ginerger's story. Very inspiring! Thanks for the good thoughts - and I'm always open to suggestions! That's how we learn afterall, right? PS - Isn't living in Oregon amazing? We love Eugene! So does Bailey!

Bailey's owner Welcome. I think reiki would be a great option for your dog. It worked very well for my dog but I highly recommend having someone experienced show you how to do it so you can be most effective with the treatments. You can read more about it in my Bailey's profile. I also recommend checking out Cody's profile (his picture is on the home page or you can search his name). His owner explored every option thoroughly and then put into place many natural healing supplements as well as conventional treatments. She is also the person who created this website and penned the book, "42 Rules to Fight Dog Cancer." She has a wealth of knowledge and I think you will find Cody's profile and her book most helpful. Good luck with your boy and I hope you will find the comfort and support you need on this site. BELIEVE you can make a difference because you can. Coming here is the first step. I will keep your Sammie in my prayers. Peace.

Ginger's owner Yes, Reiki works. You can become attuned to Reiki 1 yourself and just offer Reiki constantly if you want and if your dog is open to receiving it. Ginger sure was! and now my Gracie is a sponge for it. Today I have a Reiki 1 class that I am teaching. At least one person in the class wants to do Reiki for animals. Isn't that great?
