O'malley's story

My wonderful O'Malley passed away 17 months ago of hemangiosarcoma of the heart. He always had been an amazingly healthy and active dog and for sure the joy of my life... I miss him every single day. I felt compelled to leave O'Malley's story on this site because I noticed that another dog owner on this site lost her dog to hemangiosarcoma after mentioning TPLO surgery... O'malley had TPLO surgery 4 weeks before the diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma... I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same thing and if maybe a major surgery could trigger hemangiosarcoma. ..I know it may just be a coincidence... but maybe not. Any similar stories out there?

Cancer fighting tip from O'malley's owner Estelle S.

Just love him/her every minute you have left with him/her...

Jackson 's owner I was sorry to read about O'malley. I too had a wonderful and big Golden. A name befitting to the breed as they have hearts of gold. Jackson was my true love, and even with the addition of a puppy to join my large fur family, I cannot get past the loss. He too had Hemangiosarcoma - of the Spleen and every other internal organ. He had two TPLO surgeries as well. One when he was Three and one when he was seven. He passed away at 11. I have been told that Osteosarcoma can result from the TPLO surgery as it is a bone cancer, but I had not heard about Hemangiosarcoma, as the type that O'malley and Jackson both had was of the blood vessels. Whatever you learn, please be sure to share. Welcome to this wonderful website and to a network of people who understand how you feel and what you are going through. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. He was a beautiful boy.

O'malley's owner Hello Jackson's owner, I just realized I replied to the wrong person... please forgive me, so I am copying my answer back to you...Thank you so much for your kind words. I miss my beautiful O'Malley every single day as you too, miss Jackson who looks so sweet, cute and beautiful too on the picture... Now that I look back I wish I had not gone with the TPLO surgery because I beleive it triggered a surge in a latent hemangiosarcoma... I know I meant to do right and I was told O'malley would be in pain and could torn his other ACL soon after the first one broke. What was the hardest for me was to restrain him after the TPLO surgery, he was such a free and active dog, he did not seem to understand why he suddenly was on a leash or restrained from getting up on the coach or the bed... I never saw him getting old, the picture in the river was taken only 6 weeks before the TPLO... He wasn't even 11. I had to make the heartbreaking decision with my vet to hepl him move on only 17 days after discovering the hemangiosarcoma... I wish I could go back and drive away from the clinic...selfishly... Just like you seem to describe it for you and Cody it was peaceful, I held his head close to mine and had my lips on his nose wanting him to know I was very close as he took his last breath... This site helps in knowing that other people share that magical love and understanding we can have with our dogs. O'Malley was a son to me. i am glad that people are also taking a closer look at what they feed their dogs... I wish I had done it earlier... I was naively convinced that O'Malley would live to be 16... What i also have learned is that we know our dogs better than any vet... as wonderful as mine are, if I had not insisted on that Tuesday evening that "something" was terribly wrong, some regular vet could have sent me back home and O'malley would have died overnight of a probable "heart attack"... instead they trusted me, did a few major test right then, came with the dreadful diagnosis but attempted and succeeded in doing a heart puncture and gave me 2 more weeks with him, I am thankful for that... I tried to make his last days as comfortable as possible although fearing that every day would be THE day... Hemangiosarcoma is a vicious disease, but so is every other type of cancer. I hope I will see O'malley again one day...
