Beatty's story

Back in September '09 I discovered a lump on Beatty's rib and was advised to keep an eye on it. X-rays indicated it was approx. 3cm. In March it felt like it had grown a bit, so we did another x-ray and found that it had grown inward and was now approx. 10cm! We had it surgically removed, along with 2 ribs and the caudal lobe of her lung (the tumor had become attached there.) During surgery they discovered a cluster of masses on the mediastinum (metastasis) and removed them as well. The pathology revealed that this is osteosarcoma, with a poor prognosis due to the tumor's large size, elevated Alk Phos level, visible metastasis, and invasiveness into surrounding tissue. We did one carboplatin treatment, which seemed to cause nerve damage in her rear legs?? (This was my observation, apparently there is no medical evidence that this should be the case). Nevertheless, last week instead of carboplatin we switched to doxorubcin. The plan is to give 5 doses at 2-wk intervals. She is also on doxycycline for its anti-cancer effects, as well as previcox. So far so good, she healed beautifully from the surgery and you would never know she is sick. We are now 6 wks post diagnosis, x-rays are clear for lung metasasis, and we are keeping our fingers crossed that we will beat the odds......

Cancer fighting tip from Beatty's owner Autumn M.

Do your RESEARCH and ask questions. Make sure the doctors are willing to work WITH you to do what is best for your dog. You should be an active participant, not just an observer!

Also, avoid any and all negativity around your dog. Your dog does not know that they have a potentially fatal disease. Insulate them from stress and negativity and keep their mood upbeat. That, in my opinion, is the best medicine.

Grady's owner I am so sorry that the original tumor came back! I am the same way-I am sure that Grady will be one of the 25% of dogs that live 2-3 years with osteosarcoma-and I pray every day that I am right! He has his first lung x-rays (after radiation) being done late July to make sure that there is no metatases. I don't know anything about that protocol, but I have found so many websites with info on them, let me know if you would like for me to send you some of them. I hope that Beatty is feeling well. He is in my thoughts!

Beatty's owner Thank you for your well wishes. I, too, hope that Grady is in that 25%. I am so happy that he is tolerating the chemotherapy, and I hear you loud and clear about your confusion regarding the 4 vs. 5 treatments!! It seems that there is so little concrete information regarding the best treatment, you know, the "every situation is different" thing. From my experience, oncologists even differ in their opinion about which drug is best! (carboplatin, cisplatin, or a combination of one of those with doxyrubicin). My new dilemma, since having to stop the traditional chemo since it wasn't working, is that I am told not to use any antioxidants or anything to boost immunity because it could interfere with the effectiveness of the low dose oral chemo we are trying now. This whole situation is so confusing and disheartening. There is no time to "try something" to gauge its effectiveness...I'm literally working with about 2 months here! Everyone on this website is so supportive...I'm pulling for each and every one of you.

Grady's owner I don't know how well it works, but my sis studies chinese medicine, and she says that rosemary water boosts your white blood cell count. Grady loves it! Plus is beatty drinks it the way that Grady does, you wouldn't have to worry about bladder issues if you use the cyclophosphamide. Let me know if you want the details. We grow it, so it is easy and FREE!

Beatty's owner An update...and its not good. May 17th I took Beatty for her 3rd chemo treatment, and we did x-rays beforehand. They showed regrowth of the original tumor (3cm x 4cm) as well as a 1cm lung nodule. Just 9 weeks post op! Traditional chemo was discontinued. I feel utterly deflated and helpless. Now we are using metronomic therapy (cyclophosphamide, palladia, and doxycycline) along with arteminisin. Anyone have any experience with this protocol, or lung metastasis? Any input would be appreciated. I knew it could go this fast but somehow I thought Beatty would be different...I am sure that's how alot of us deal with the horrible diagnosis of cancer. I don't know whether its denial, or hope. I'm definitely not in denial anymore...and I'm trying to keep hope.

Cody's owner I used low dose cyclophosphamide along with diet and an arsenal of herbs and supplements for Cody. I know how hard it is, but I encourage you not to give up hope yet. I have heard of lots of folks who have had more quality time with the use o natural treatments. I also followed the regiment in Dr. Pitcairn's book. See: http://www.amazon.com/dp/157954973X?tag=figdogcan-20&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=157954973X&adid=0048VG3P7XP8QXVN275S&. The book gives you some very specific things to try right away. And in my opinion it can't hurt.

Beatty's owner Thank you so much for the words of encouragement, and the leads on more information. Could you tell me what dose of cyclophosphamide Cody was on?

Cody's owner 25 mg every other day. Cody was 75 lbs. You have to be really careful with it. Make sure Beatty drinks lots of water or give him extra chicken broth. This is really important as the drug causes bladder issues, which are tough to treat once damage is done.
