We do have another dog, Hemingway, that is getting older as well. I am considering a "pal" for him, but just can't do it...but I'm coming around slowly. Thanks for your message. I appreciate it.

Cody's owner How is Tanner doing? I was told the same thing ... Cody was to only live a few days if that. I got 519 days with him. HSA is one of the cancers that seems to do good with holistic care. I would get Tanner on yunnan paiyo right away as this helps stop the internal bleeding. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Tanner's owner Tanner is still with us. She has about 2-3 good days for every bad one. I have thought we were going to have to put her down twice now and she rebounds the next day. I hope I'm not being selfish, but, on those good days, she doesn't even seem sick. I just bought Yunnan Paiyao and gave her her first dose today. Thank you for your advice on that. What was the dose you gave Cody? I started with only 2 capsules today. I also started he on some other supplement that my acupuncturist says will help her. It is some sort of Reishi mushroom thing. I don't know but I am willing to try anything. She didn't move for over 12 hours last night and now she is hopping on the furniture begging for food. Thank you so much for your concern. I really appreciate everyone's kind words!

Cody's owner I gave Cody 4 pills a day. If he seemed to be weak and having a bleed out I would double the dose and give him the red emergency pill. From what I understand, when they are having a bleed out, they don't hurt ... they are just tired. Cody had bad days too, but then it go better. Also, have you changed Tanner's diet? I made Cody's food after he was diagnosed. Check out Cody's page as I posted the recipe there.

Jackson 's owner Oh my do I know your sadness. I lost my Jackson to Hemangiosarcoma in March. I am so sorry for what you are going through. I understand exactly what you mean by not being able to put Tanner to sleep while she still knows what is going on. I felt the same way - However, I truly believe that dogs - all animals - have a better understanding of the lifecyle and accept fate much better than we do. That is why it is important to take yourself out of the equation and do what is right for her. These precious creatures are just not in our lives long enough. But our lives will forever be enriched by their short stay. I hope you are okay through these next days/weeks/months. I found great comfort in this website. Writing and reading other stories will help you quite a bit. Keep us posted.

Ginger's owner Thanks for sharing Tanner's story. My heart goes out to you. He's such a beautiful boy. I'm so sorry they are offering no hope. We were also given no hope with Ginger. We chose not to do chemo and only did "supportive" natural care after her surgery. It worked for Ginger. There may still be some good things you can offer Tanner. Have you considered Reiki healing energy? It may help him feel more comfortable. Please let me know if I can help in any way. Ginger's story is on this site and there's my website as well. Blessings to you in this difficult time. Rosemary

I have not tried Reiki healing. I have reached out to some places in Chicago that have offered it, but never heard back. I wish I could find a place to go for it. I'm sure it would be comfortable for her. Thanks so much for writing to me. This website has really been great for us. Lots of ideas and well wishes. Thanks for your concern!

Grady's owner HELP!!!! I hope someone out there has gone through a similar situation and can offer me advice or a place to turn....Grady has his 4th round on Friday. I have heard that after 3, it gets harder-so I am nervous about it. So far we have had no side effects whatsoever. Originally I was told 3-4 rounds. then it changed to 4-5. the other day I spoke with the vet at UF (who I have been working with this whole time) and he said that I could do 5-6. They aren't testing Grady in between rounds, so there is no reason that the number is changing-except that noone knows what the magic number is. It costs $600 every round-so I am quite perplexed and don't know what to do. I backed myself into a corner because the place I am getting chemo is not the experts (they are giving me the carbo at cost, so I save approx $500 every round). They are using the protocol that the experts gave, so I am confident with that part. We have x-rays on July 13 (it is the 3 mth mark). If they are clear....which I pray to god they are, I really won't know what to do. I have been out of money (thankfully I have care credit)...and hopefully I will be able to raise some soon at fundraisers. I have spent so much so far, it seems like should just do the full amount of 6 rounds. As you can tell, I am really frustrated. The meds are another thing. Grady is on rimadyl and tramdol. The dr said just to keep him on them. Supposedly with the radiation, there is no more pain in the the shoulder that had the tumor-so I am not too sure why I should keep him on them. He does have hip dysplasia-which only acts up if it is cold, wet or he does too much swimming...Yet another dilemma that I have. If I knew for sure that he needed the meds I wouldn't have a problem keeping him on them. I just hate to stop giving them to him to see if he develops pain-and then have him hurt to the point of him actually showing pain before I could see it. I think that I have a huge trust issue with the doctors-every person that I have seen has given me different advice. If I had all of the money in the world I would not think twice about it...but I am almost out of care credit. For anyone reading this, you can probably guess I have not had anyone to talk to about this. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. Last question..has anyone experienced trying both the cerenia injection and the cerenia tablet before chemotherapy? I would like to know if they work the same. Thanks for listening!

Cody's owner Aviva I know how hard this is. I did not do chemo on Cody so I can't really give you advice on chemo, but I do know that rimadyl is bad for the liver so unless he is truly in pain, I would not give it to him. Also tramadol is a pretty strong narcotic I believe. Again, I would not give it unless necessary. Also, I suggest you re-post your question on the community wall at: http://www.fightdogcancer.com/comments as when you post to your wall, it only goes to you. Sorry if that is confusing. We are reworking the site to make it more intuitive. Also, I have heard that artemisia is a good cancer preventative, especially for bone cancer. I now give it to my current golden on a monthly basis for 10 days as a preventative. Hope this helps.

Beatty's owner With so much sorrow I write to let you all know that Beatty lost her fight on Saturday June 12th, just a few days shy of her three month post-surgery milestone. On June 7th a new set of x-rays (to evaluate the success of the metronomic protocol) showed that in less than 3 weeks the first lung nodule had more than doubled, and there were at least five more. Also, the original tumor that had begun to grow back had quadrupled in that 3 week period. As the week progressed she had increasing difficulty breathing, and she was tired. Having done everything possible to help her fight this terrible disease, this was the last thing I could do to help her. The grief is unbearable, but know that I am thinking of you all and hoping that your beloved pups beat the odds.

Bailey's owner I am so very sorry to hear about Beatty. I know how difficult it is to say goodbye to one who is so loved. My Bailey crossed rainbow bridge just last August and although some days are better than others, there is not a day that I don't feel the loss. Just take comfort in knowing that Beatty is at peace and you did what was best her. I often take comfort in the following verse, "So long as the memory of certain beloved friends lives in my heart, I shall say that life is good." - Helen Keller. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. Peace.

Jackson 's owner I am so sorry to hear about Beatty. The loss of a dog is perhaps one of the hardest things one could go through - yet it takes a dog person to recognize this. The way that I rationalize and tolerate the loss of my Jackson is to just realize how lucky I am to have had him in my life at all. What is the saying... Better to have loved and lost than to not have loved at all. That precious Beatty will always be with you in spirit and in memory. In time that lump in your throat and knot in your stomach will losen and you will be able to smile instead of cry when you think of her. Again, my sincerest sympathies.

Shooz's owner I am devastated. Shooz was in remission in February 2010. She just went for her three month check up only to find that the cancer has returned with a vegeance. Now to decide what to do with my poor Shooz. Right now she is feeling good. Chemo will shrink the swollen lymph nodes and slow the growth of the cancer. She did receive a treatment the day I got the bad news. She is such a good girl. A large chunk of my heart has been ripped right out.

Cody's owner Oh Petra. I am so sorry to hear the bad news. If you can, try to remember that Shooz is still with you and still feeling good. Many folks on this site have had good results with natural treatments in addition to chemo. My thoughts are with you and if if you want to know more about what I did with Cody, just let me know.

Bailey's owner Petra, my heart goes out to you. I remember the day I got the devastating news about my Bailey. I have to agree with Aimee on the natural treatments. I chose not to go with conventional treatments and stuck to herbal remedies, coupled with lots of love, attention, exercise, and what I refer to as healing sessions (you can read more on Bailey's page) and although the vets gave him only 3-4 months to live, Bailey survived for almost 2 more years. I'm so grateful for that added time with my baby boy. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Shooz. Peace.

Bailey's owner Hi Petra, I agree with Rosemary. I also can't say enough about flax seed (don't use the oil unless you're not going to cook it as the oil becomes toxic when heated). I would go with the dry type. It is a great cancer fighter. I'm also a big fan of Reiki treatments. Bailey responded very well to these treatments, especially when he was having a particularly bad day. You can read more about the sessions I performed with Bailey on his page or search the internet. There's a wealth of information on the subject. If I can answer any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Jeanne

Dallas and I have been doing long walks in the woods and park everyday after work. So good to see her run and be a dog again. That tongue of hers though seems to get drug through everything. Now her bandanas aren't just for fashion, they come in very handy to wipe away dirt and slobber.

Dallas's owner Today Dallas has her 2nd round of chemo. She was so lucky the first time with none of the side effects I was expecting. A little tired, a little less hungry and her CBC count came in a little low but no nauseau, no vomiting etc... I don't know why but it seems so hard for me to have her go through these treatments all the same. Maybe it is the slap in the face that we are really dealing with cancer here. Or maybe it is just my own guilt over dragging her through more and more with the vet.
